Overachievement Therapy NYC
You already rank near the top. The achievement is real. The gap inside it is real too. Slowing down feels less like rest and more like exposure.
Anxiety-driven overachievement is a specific pattern we work with at Therapy24x7. Our NYC psychotherapy practice offers weekly therapy for adults who have already achieved most of what they aimed for, and find that the bar keeps moving, the stopping point keeps receding, and the discomfort of slowing down is louder than the discomfort of keeping going. Therapy names the older habit producing the chase for the next thing and slowly changes the structure that has been needing it. In person at our Midtown Manhattan office, or online statewide across New York.

Six common shapes anxiety-driven overachievement takes. The same older habit, firing on a different surface.
The bar keeps moving
You hit the goal you set five years ago. You almost did not notice. The new goal arrived before the old one had landed. The list of unfinished is longer than ever, even though you are further than you have ever been.
Stopping feels like exposure
A real break feels worse than a busy week. The unstructured Sunday is the hardest day. The body is loudest when the calendar is quietest. You scheduled three things in your vacation, just in case.
Feeling worthwhile only when you produce
Your sense of who you are tracks with the last result. A good week feels like proof. A bad week feels like exposure. The bar moves up after every win, so the win never quite counts.
Perfectionism page →Crash after a big win
You reached the thing. Promotion, exit, IPO, milestone. The achievement was supposed to be the rest. The floor dropped instead. Many of our clients reach us in the month after the win.
Burnout page →The chase that never ends
The next achievement is always the real test. The current title never feels settled. The next promotion is the one that will count. The horizon recedes at the same pace you walk toward it.
Imposter syndrome page →Lonely at the top
You have achieved most of what you aimed for and very few people in your life are working at this level. The isolation is real. The achievement does not make it less real. Therapy names the loneliness as itself.

Six specific moments where anxiety-driven overachievement usually shows up. Each one has the same wiring underneath.
The morning after the promotion
The promotion landed. By the next morning the next promotion was the new goal. The current title already felt temporary. Therapy names what the next goal is protecting against.
The unstructured Sunday
The calendar is finally clear. The body is loudest. The discomfort of stopping is bigger than the discomfort of working. The work changes what Sunday is for, slowly.
The IPO, exit, or major milestone
The thing you spent years building actually happened. The floor dropped. The achievement did not feel the way it was supposed to. Many of our clients reach us in the month after a win, not before.
The vacation with three meetings
You scheduled meetings into the vacation. The body could not be only on vacation. The work changes the math of what a vacation costs.
The 360 review that said ‘you are doing great’
The feedback said you are doing great. The internal response was a faster pulse and a list of what you could still improve. Therapy names what the praise is hitting.
The lonely top
You have achieved most of what you aimed for. Few people in your life are working at this level. Therapy names the loneliness as itself, not as a symptom of something else.
Overachievement can also be something else.
The older habit overlaps with other conditions. Three places where the clinical edge matters.
Perfectionism
When the overachievement is paired with a need for everything you produce to be flawless. We work both at the same time.
Perfectionism page →Crash after a big win
When the chase has finally produced a crash. The depletion is real. We work the depletion and the underlying pattern at the same time.
Burnout page →High-functioning depression
When the chase is masking a quieter, longer flatness. Therapy names both. Many overachievers carry a low-grade depression they cannot name because they are too productive to call it depression.
Depression page →What does anxiety-driven overachievement therapy in NYC look like at Therapy24x7?
Therapy24x7 treats anxiety-driven overachievement in working adults, the rank-near-the-top life that depends on never stopping. Sessions are weekly individual psychotherapy with the same clinician each week, at the practice’s Midtown Manhattan office (141 East 35th Street) or via secure online video across NY State. The work separates the achievement from the engine of fear underneath. In-network with Cigna and Aetna; out-of-network superbills for other carriers.
How Therapy24x7 works with anxiety-driven overachievement.
Overachievement is a strategy that worked. It earned safety once. It is also extracting a cost that has been climbing for years. Therapy names the strategy and slowly changes what it is for.
Depth-focused (we look at what’s underneath, not just the symptom), not productivity coaching
We do not optimize how much you produce. We do not run a system. Therapy is the slow change of the older habit that has been needing the next achievement to feel safe.
Where the bar started
Most of our clients learned young that worth was contingent. A parent whose approval arrived after a grade. A household where stopping was a risk. The adult version is the same engine at high pressure at work.
Same clinician each week
You stay with the clinician on our team you are matched with. Overachievement patterns often run on a relationship with an internalized critic. The therapy relationship is the slow change of that internal one.
Midtown office and statewide online
Our office is in Midtown Manhattan with current openings. HIPAA-secure online video therapy across New York State for the weeks the schedule does not allow in-person.
These can look similar from the outside. Therapy is different for each.
Performance coaching vs weekly therapy over months.
Both have a role. They are not the same intervention, and they do different things. Here is what changes when the work is about what the achieving has been doing for you, not how to achieve more.
Executive / performance coaching
Optimizes your output. Refines your decision-making, communication, leadership skills. Builds frameworks for the next stage of the career.
→ Useful in parallel with the work.
Depth-focused (we look at what’s underneath, not just the symptom) therapy
Names the older habit producing the chase. Slowly changes the structure that has been needing the next achievement. The achievement becomes about the work, not about safety.
→ What we do at Therapy24x7.
The chase keeps running. Weekly therapy over months changes what it is for.
Most clients reach us at a moment when an achievement has landed and the chase did not stop. The first weeks are about stabilizing. Weekly therapy over months is where the older habit actually changes.
The first weeks
The first sessions are about meeting the clinician and naming the chase. The bar that keeps moving gets named. The discomfort of stopping gets named.
The middle months
The sessions move from achievement to pattern. The clinician on our team starts naming what the chase has been doing for you, and the older logic underneath it. The older habit becomes visible.
The longer journey
The chase runs at a lower volume. You do not become unambitious. You become discriminating about which next thing is signal and which is the older habit talking.
“I made partner. The next morning I started thinking about the next thing. Therapy did not make me less ambitious. It made the ambition stop costing me my weekends.”Composite vignette · Law firm partner · Shared with permission and lightly edited for privacy
Here is what that looks like in practice.
Three adults, three different overachievement stories.
Three composite vignettes from clinicians on our team. Shared with permission and lightly edited for privacy.
Ben · Murray Hill · Law firm partner
Law firm partner. Made partner, immediately started thinking about the next thing. The chase had hollowed out their weekends. After a year of weekly work, the ambition stayed and the weekends came back.
Maya · Williamsburg · Founder, post-exit
Founder, recent exit. The exit was supposed to be the rest. Three weeks later they were starting the next company. The work put words to what the chase was protecting against. The next company started slower and is still going.
Sarah · Upper East Side · Senior healthcare executive
Senior healthcare executive, lonely at the top. Few peers at the same level. Therapy named the loneliness as itself. The achievement stayed. The loneliness stopped being a private secret.

Here is what happens between booking and your first session.
The 7-day path from booking the 15-minute matching call to your first weekly session.
What the central care team does for you
- Day 0 · You book the 15-minute matching call. Acuity is open 24/7. Pick a slot that works. No card, no commitment.
- Day 0–2 · The matching call. 15 minutes with the care team (not a therapist). We ask what is bringing you in, share what to ask your insurance about your plan, and match you with a clinician on our team whose work fits the overachievement pattern.
- Day 1–3 · Intake paperwork. Standard intake forms arrive by secure portal. We confirm the in-network or out-of-network billing path. You sign and return.
- Day 3–7 · First session. Most adult clients are in a first session within seven days of the match call. Midtown office or online video therapy across New York State.
- Week 2 onward · Weekly sessions. Therapy is weekly. Depth-focused insight work does not reliably reach what it needs to at lower frequencies.
- Six-week fit check. If the match is not landing after six weeks, our care team coordinates an internal re-match with a different clinician on our team. You do not go back to a directory. You do not start the search over.
Skip the online therapist directory. We match you on our team.
Directories list dozens of clinicians and almost no signal for someone at your stage. The match call replaces the grid.
A central care team member (not a therapist) takes the 15-minute call. We share what to ask your insurance, ask what is bringing you in, and match you with the clinician on our team whose work fits the overachievement pattern. We have clinicians experienced with high-achieving professionals, founders, and senior leaders.
Book a free 15-min matching callThe reasons adults wait, and what each is about.
Four things that most often stop someone from booking the call. Each one has an answer.
“I am not in crisis. Therapy feels excessive.”
Crisis is not the threshold. Many of our highest-functioning clients arrive precisely because nothing is on fire externally and the internal cost has been climbing for years. That is a worthwhile threshold.
“I do not want to lose my edge.”
Therapy does not remove your drive. It separates the part of your drive that is signal from the part that is the older habit. Many clients become more effective once the older habit is no longer always-on.
“I do not have the time.”
Most of our adult clients schedule weekly during a lunch hour or right after the workday. Acuity is 24/7. Sessions can be online. The time investment is real and finite.
“My career identity is the achievement. Who am I if I stop chasing?”
That is the question the work is for. We do not answer it for you. We make space for the question to be asked, slowly, with the same clinician each week.
What adults ask before they book
The questions our care team hears most often in the first 15-minute call.
What does overachievement therapy actually work on?
It works on the older habit producing the overachievement, not just the symptom of the week. Therapy is weekly depth-focused (we look at what’s underneath, not just the symptom) therapy. The clinician on our team puts words to the older habit and slowly changes the structure that has been needing it.
How long does overachievement therapy take?
Usually nine to eighteen months of weekly therapy at this practice. Some clients notice early shifts in the first three months. The older habit underneath takes longer to change. We require weekly sessions because depth-focused insight work does not reliably reach what it needs to at lower frequencies.
What if the match is not right?
We hold a six-week fit window. If the work is not landing after six weeks, our care team coordinates an internal re-match with a different clinician on our team. You do not go back to a directory. You do not start the search over.
How soon can I start?
Most of our adult clients are in a first session within seven days of the matching call. Midtown office has current openings. Online video therapy is available statewide across New York.
Do you prescribe medication?
No. We do not prescribe at this practice. If medication is appropriate, we coordinate with your primary care doctor or refer to a psychiatrist.
How much does a session cost?
Cost depends on your individual insurance plan. For in-network Aetna or Cigna, you pay your plan copay or deductible. For out-of-network, we provide superbills you can submit to your insurer for reimbursement.
I drink socially or use cannabis occasionally, can I still start therapy?
Yes. Occasional alcohol or cannabis use is not a barrier. What we do not work with is active addiction. If alcohol, drugs, or another substance is in a pattern of addiction, we refer to specialized substance treatment first and hold a spot to start with us once that work is in place.
Can I do this online?
Yes. Most of our clients use a mix of in-person sessions at our Midtown office and online video therapy across New York State. HIPAA-secure, billed the same way as in-person sessions.
