Therapy With Wellfleet Student Insurance in NYC: If Your Card Says Cigna, We Bill It Directly
Wellfleet runs different plans on different networks. The New York Wellfleet plans we checked run on the Cigna network, and we are in-network with Cigna and Aetna. Your school plan can cover real weekly sessions, not just a few capped visits at the campus counseling center. Upstate students, including Canisius in Buffalo, are seen online across New York State. A different network on the card? There is a path for that too.
The New York Wellfleet student plans we have checked run on the Cigna network, which we bill directly. The schools that switched to Aetna are covered here too, because we hold both networks. Wellfleet also uses several other networks, so your card is what decides. This page maps which New York school uses which network for 2026-27. It is part of our insurance guide for New York clients.

Quick answer: Wellfleet student insurance can cover therapy in NYC when the plan runs on the Cigna network, which we bill directly. For 2026-27, Sarah Lawrence College, Molloy University, Manhattan University and Canisius University run Wellfleet plans on the Cigna network. A parent’s Cigna plan works the same way. Wellfleet uses other networks too, including First Health, MultiPlan and PHCS, so check the logo on your card.
Which schools use Wellfleet student insurance for therapy in NYC, and which moved to Aetna
School plans changed hands this summer, which is why last year’s answer may be wrong for you now. Every plan below still covers you through the end of 2026, so this is the picture for the year you are starting, checked in August 2026.
| Your school | 2026-27 plan network | What that means for sessions with us |
|---|---|---|
| Sarah Lawrence College (Westchester) | Cigna PPO network (Wellfleet plan), August 15, 2026 through August 14, 2027 | In-network. We bill the plan directly. |
| Wellfleet runs plans on several networks, not just Cigna. The rows below reflect the plan documents we checked; the logo on your card is what actually decides. | ||
| Molloy University (Long Island) | Cigna PPO network (Wellfleet plan), August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2027 | In-network. We bill the plan directly. |
| Manhattan University (Riverdale, Bronx) | Cigna PPO network (Wellfleet plan), 2026-27 | In-network. We bill the plan directly. |
| Canisius University (Buffalo) | Cigna PPO network (Wellfleet plan), August 15, 2026 through August 14, 2027 | In-network, by online session anywhere in New York State. |
| Cooper Union (Manhattan) | Wellfleet plan, August 15, 2026 through August 14, 2027. Cigna PPO on its earlier plan documents, network not restated this year | Check the corner logo. If it reads Cigna, we bill directly. |
| NYU (Manhattan) | Transitioning carriers for 2026-27; new waivers run through Aetna Student Health | Depends on the new card. Cigna or Aetna, we bill directly. |
| School of Visual Arts (Manhattan) | Moves to Aetna on August 25, 2026 | In-network. We bill Aetna directly. |
| Columbia, Barnard, The New School, St. John’s, Fordham, FIT, Juilliard, Yeshiva | Aetna Student Health | In-network. We bill Aetna directly. |
This is the mark to look for. If your student insurance card carries this logo, your plan is administered by Wellfleet, and the network name printed beside it is the part that decides whether we are in-network for you.
How we built this list. Every school above holds a plan that still covers you through the end of 2026. Where the 2026-27 documents name the Cigna network, we have said so plainly. Where a school runs a Wellfleet plan but has not restated its network this year, the row says to check your card instead, because we would rather send you to the corner logo than guess on your behalf. Your insurance card is the source of truth. If the card in your wallet says Cigna PPO or Cigna OAP (two forms of the Cigna network) or Aetna, we can bill it. If you are not sure what your card means, bring it to the free call and we will read it with you.
Your school left the Cigna network? Your Cigna card may not have left you
The School of Visual Arts (SVA) moves its student plan to Aetna on August 25, 2026, and NYU announced its own carrier change for 2026-27. If that is your school, two Cigna paths usually remain open.
First, the waiver path: most New York schools let you waive the school plan when you already hold comparable coverage, and many students sit on a parent’s Cigna plan without thinking of it as theirs. That card bills here at in-network rates, exactly like a school plan would, and it usually stays valid until you turn 26. The same goes for your own employer or marketplace plan, if you carry one. Second, the household path: if your family is choosing coverage this fall, a Cigna plan keeps your therapy in-network with us from the first session. Our Cigna coverage guide explains what those plans typically include, and our post on finding a therapist in NYC who takes Aetna or Cigna covers the search itself.
And if you are an SVA student staying on the school’s new Aetna plan, you are still covered here, because we hold both networks. NYU students: our NYU page covers your school’s change in detail. Or skip the reading and bring whichever card you hold to the matching call.
Free · 15 min · No credit card · You talk with our care team first
From insurance card to first session, in plain steps
You do not need to understand insurance to start. You need your card and fifteen minutes.
Step one: what happens on the free matching call?
You talk with our care team, not a therapist, so there is nothing to perform. We ask what is going on and what you want from therapy. We look at your insurance card together and tell you whether your plan’s network is one we bill. Then we suggest a clinician on our team whose way of working fits what you described. Anything that matters in a match belongs on this call, including wanting a clinician who is affirming of your identity.
Step two: who checks what my student plan covers?
You do, and we make that easy. Insurance plans only give full benefit details to the member. So we hand you the exact questions to ask: whether outpatient psychotherapy is covered, whether there is a deductible (the amount you pay before your plan starts paying), and what your share is per session. You call the number on your card. It usually takes under ten minutes. Then you know your numbers before your first session. And if calling your insurer feels like a lot, say so on the matching call and we will walk through it together.
Step three: how soon can I start, and what does it cost?
Most clients have a first session within 7 days. We bill Cigna and Aetna plans directly, so you pay only what your individual plan sets as your share. Cost depends on your individual plan, which is why step two matters. You can meet in our Midtown Manhattan office or online from anywhere in New York State, including your dorm or apartment.
What to have ready for the call. Your insurance card, front and back. That is the whole list. You do not need your diagnosis named. You do not need to know what kind of therapy you want. You do not need a tidy way to describe the problem. “Something is off and I want it to stop” is a complete answer. Our care team has heard every version of the first call, including the ones that start with a long pause. If you like to prepare anyway, our clinicians wrote a short guide to getting ready for a first session.
Semester break does not have to interrupt anything. If you are on your laptop in another part of New York State over winter break, sessions continue online. If you leave the state or the country, we plan around it together, because the weekly hour works best when it is actually weekly.
Why use student insurance for therapy off campus?
Campus counseling centers do necessary short-term work under real limits: session caps, long waits in October, a different counselor each time. Using your student health insurance for therapy off campus removes those limits. The plan already exists. You already paid for it with your tuition bill. What changes is what you get for it.
With us, therapy is the weekly hour with one clinician who stays. The person you meet in your first week is the person who knows the whole story by finals, which is when you need them most. Our clinicians work psychodynamically, which means the sessions look for the pattern underneath this semester’s version of the problem, not just this week’s symptom. The 2 AM spiral before a deadline. The email to a professor that takes forty minutes to send. The homesickness you did not expect. These usually have older roots, and therapy that reaches the roots is the kind worth using your insurance on.1
Fit matters at every stage of school, so we watch it. If the match is not right by six weeks, we re-match you with another clinician on our team, and we do that work, not you. You do not go back to a directory, and you do not start the story over from a waiting list. A student plan also generally lets you pick your own in-network therapist, which surprises people:
“I assumed the school plan was for strep throat and broken wrists. Nobody told me it could pay for a therapist I chose.” Shared with permission and lightly edited for privacy.
Many of the students we see are the high-functioning kind. The GPA is fine. The internship applications went out on time. And none of it feels the way it looks from outside. That includes LGBTQ+ students, international students, and people back in school at 30 or 50. In therapy, how it feels can start to catch up with how it looks. If that is familiar, our pages on high-functioning anxiety and anxiety therapy describe the pattern in more depth.
Our clinicians have also written about this stretch of life directly. See starting college and leaving home, college loneliness and what it does to sleep and appetite, and the quarter-life crisis question. Returning to school mid-career? The patterns in life changes in your 40s, 50s, and 60s may fit better.
Same-week openings, in office or online
In-network, out-of-network, and the waiver question
These six cover almost every student who lands on this page. Open the one that sounds like yours.
My school plan is on the Cigna or Aetna network
This is the simple case. We bill your plan directly, and you pay only your plan’s share. Your card will say Cigna PPO, Cigna OAP, Aetna, or Aetna Student Health. PPO stands for preferred provider organization, which just means a network of providers your plan has agreed to pay. Bring the card to the matching call and we will confirm the network together.
My Wellfleet card shows a network that is not Cigna
That happens, because Wellfleet rents several networks. Your card may show First Health, MultiPlan, PHCS, Cofinity, MagnaCare or The Alliance. On those we are out-of-network. You can still work with us: we provide a receipt-style superbill upon request, which you submit to your plan for whatever out-of-network reimbursement it offers. Bring the card to the free call. We will read the corner logo with you before you commit to anything.
My plan is on another carrier, or I waived the school plan
If you waived the school plan, you are on other coverage, often a parent’s plan. Many parents’ plans are Cigna, which is the best case here: we bill it directly at in-network rates, and Aetna works the same way. Check that card first. If your coverage is with another carrier entirely, sessions are out-of-network with us. We provide a receipt-style superbill upon request, which you submit to your plan for whatever out-of-network reimbursement it offers. Reimbursement depends on the plan, and we will be straight with you about that on the call rather than guessing.
I am on a parent’s plan and I do not want my parents to know
This deserves a direct answer. When any insurance plan pays a claim, the person who owns the plan, usually your parent, can see that a claim was paid, along with the provider name, dates, and type of service, though never what you talked about. What you say in session is confidential, with the standard legal exceptions around safety that your clinician will explain in the first session. Is that a real concern for you? Raise it on the matching call. We will lay out your options honestly, including what New York law lets you request from a carrier.
Does my student plan even cover weekly therapy, or just a few sessions?
School plans built on the Cigna and Aetna networks generally cover outpatient psychotherapy the way they cover other outpatient care. Your plan’s deductible and your share per session still apply. That is different from the campus counseling center’s session cap, which is a staffing limit, not an insurance rule. Federal parity law says most plans must cover mental health care at least as fully as medical care.2 Your plan documents state the specifics, and we give you the questions to ask.
What happens when I graduate and lose the student plan?
Student coverage ends with the plan year, not the diploma ceremony, so most May graduates stay covered into the summer. Before your plan ends, we plan the transition with you: moving to an employer plan, a marketplace plan, or a parent’s plan if you are under 26. Because we hold both major networks, graduating usually does not mean losing your clinician.
What do students bring to therapy? Six things we hear often
No one books a first session over “stress.” People book over a specific Tuesday: deadline panic, homesickness that came late, a breakup, the imposter feeling, family pressure, stress that turned physical. Yours may look different. It may touch identity, faith, or who knows what at home. It still belongs here.
The 2 AM deadline spiral
The paper is due Friday. It is Tuesday, and you have opened the document nine times. Each time, your chest tightens and you close it. That is anxiety, not laziness, and therapy treats it that way, because it usually is not about the paper. Many clients find Tuesday nights get quieter once the fear underneath loosens.
Homesickness that arrived late
You were fine in September. The ache showed up in November, and it embarrassed you. Missing home mid-semester is not a failure of independence. It is attachment doing its job. Naming what you actually miss, out loud and weekly, is often how the ache loosens its grip on your evenings.
The first real breakup
Everyone says you will be fine. You are not sleeping. A breakup in school can pull up every earlier loss you never had words for, so the weekly hour gives it words. Grief often starts to ease once you say it out loud to someone. Many students find they stop having to pretend in class that they are fine.
Grad school imposter feeling
Everyone in your cohort seems to have read more, published more, slept more. You got in on merit and feel like you got in by error. That is what people call imposter syndrome, and we work on where that self-critical voice learned its lines. Most clients find it is much older than grad school, and many notice seminar comments leaving their mouth before the voice can stop them.
Expectations with tuition attached
Your family is paying, or they sacrificed for the scholarship, and every choice feels owed to someone. The pre-med track you never chose. The major you defend at every dinner. Or you are funding it yourself mid-career, and failure feels unaffordable. Therapy is one hour a week that belongs to what you want, so you can find out what that is.
The semester stress turned physical
Sleep slipped first. Then appetite. Then the Sunday dread crept into Saturday. When stress goes physical, students often wait, because nothing feels bad enough to count. It counts, and it is a valid reason to start. Weekly sessions work on what keeps the stress coming back.

Questions students ask before the first call
Can I see you instead of my campus counseling center?
Yes. Your student health insurance is regular insurance, and it works at any in-network practice, on campus or off. Some students use both: the counseling center for a crisis moment, and weekly sessions with us for the deeper pattern. Most student plans do not require a referral to start, and we hand you the exact question to ask your plan so you know for sure.
I am an international student. Does this work for me?
Usually yes. Most New York schools require international students to hold the school plan, which usually means your card carries one of the networks on this page, though not always one we bill. Check the corner logo. Therapy here is also separate from your school. We report nothing to your university or to immigration authorities, and seeking outpatient therapy does not, by itself, affect your student status. You do not need perfect English for therapy to help. And if getting to Midtown Manhattan between classes is the obstacle, sessions can be online from your apartment.
Can my parents call you to set this up for me?
They can call on your behalf and we will explain how everything works. If you are 18 or older, the therapy itself is yours: you choose to start, and what you say in session stays between you and your clinician. Plenty of first calls start with a worried parent, and we are glad to talk with them.
Do you prescribe medication if I need it?
We do not prescribe. If medication becomes part of the conversation, we coordinate with your primary care doctor or refer you to a psychiatrist, and we keep doing the weekly therapy alongside. Many student plans cover psychiatry the same way they cover therapy.
What if I am in crisis right now?
Therapy with us is weekly outpatient care, not crisis care. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself tonight, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or use your campus emergency line. When the immediate danger has passed, we are here for what comes next.
How do I know which insurance network my school uses?
Look at the logo in the corner of your insurance card, not the school website. That corner logo is the part that matters for booking therapy. It matters most on a Wellfleet card, because Wellfleet does not use one network. It rents several. Two students can both hold Wellfleet and have different coverage. Cigna PPO or Cigna OAP means we bill your plan directly. School websites also lag a year behind. Some New York schools, including SVA and NYU, are changing carriers for 2026-27. If the card confuses you, bring it to the free call.
