OTD Therapy NYC: For Adults on the Other Side of Leaving.

You left. Or you are leaving. Or you are still inside, and the doubts feel heavier than they used to.

Our NYC OTD therapists work with adults who left Orthodoxy, evangelical Christianity, Mormonism, or another high-demand faith. Therapy makes space for the part of you that does not fit on either side anymore. Weekly therapy: depth-aware, talk-based, in Midtown Manhattan or online across New York State.

Quick answer: OTD therapy NYC is weekly talk therapy for adults who left Orthodoxy, evangelical Christianity, Mormonism, or another high-demand faith. Our team in Midtown Manhattan and across New York State works with the part of you that does not fit on either side anymore. In-network with Aetna and Cigna.

What does post-religious therapy in NYC look like at Therapy24x7?

Therapy24x7 sees adults navigating identity, relationships, and meaning after leaving a faith community. Sessions are weekly individual psychotherapy with the same clinician each week, at the practice’s Midtown Manhattan office (141 East 35th Street) or via secure online video across NY State. The work sits with the losses and the openings that come with separating from a community that shaped you. In-network with Cigna and Aetna; out-of-network superbills for other carriers.

How we work

How an OTD therapist in NYC works with you.

Weekly. Talk-based therapy that works on the underlying material, not just on coping with this week’s version of it. Same clinician each week.

Weekly rhythm

One hour, same time, same clinician. The work compounds across months. Leaving a high-demand world is not a six-session topic.

Depth, not scripts

No protocol modules. No worksheets to bring in. We work the underlying material that the doubt, the grief, and the dual life keep producing.

In office or online

In office in Midtown Manhattan or face-to-face online statewide across New York State. Choose what fits your week.

One care team for matching

You do not pick from a directory. Our care team takes a 15-minute call, hears what you are working with, and matches you with the clinician on our team best suited to it.

What changes for OTD adults specifically: weekly talk therapy works on the rules you were given before you could choose them and the part of you that has been carrying them since. Over time the original voice gets quieter and the version of you that did not get to grow up gets louder. Instead of being managed week after week.

Stage 3 · the match

Skip the directory grid. We match you.

You should not have to read twenty bios and guess which therapist gets it.

Other practices send you to a directory and ask you to pick. Ours does the matching for you. A 15-minute call with our care team (not a therapist), you describe what you are working with, and we hand-match you to the clinician on our team who fits what you brought. You do not vet anyone. You do not write the same intake message four times. You meet your therapist already matched.

Stage 4 · how the practice runs

Insurance, scheduling, and billing.

In-network with Aetna and Cigna.

If you have an Aetna commercial plan or a Cigna commercial plan, we file with your insurance and you pay your copay or coinsurance per your plan. Cost depends on your individual insurance plan.

What you do: Call the member services number on the back of your card and ask: “Is Therapy24x7 LCSW PLLC in-network for outpatient mental health?” We share the exact questions to ask on the matching call so you are not flying blind.

Out-of-network plans.

For most other commercial plans (United, Anthem, Empire BlueCross, Oxford PPO, and others), we provide a receipt-style superbill upon request for your plan’s out-of-network reimbursement.

  • You pay the session rate at the time of service.
  • You submit the superbill to your plan.
  • Your plan reimburses you per your out-of-network mental-health benefit.

How scheduling works on the back end.

Same clinician

The therapist you match with on call one is the therapist you keep. We do not rotate.

24/7 booking

Acuity is open around the clock. You can book and reschedule outside business hours.

Most start within 7 days

Most clients have their first session within a week of the matching call.

Six-week rematch guarantee

If after six weeks the fit is wrong, we rematch you on our team at no cost. The work matters more than the clinician you happened to start with.

How it shows up after you leave.

You can still hear the voice in your head. You can still feel the calendar in your bones.

“I should be free now and instead I am numb.”

The relief did not arrive on schedule. The numbness is a third state, not the in-between between belief and not-belief.

“I miss the structure and I am ashamed to.”

The calendar gave you a frame. Wednesday meant something. Saturday meant something. Now Wednesday is just Wednesday and that is harder than expected.

“I think I left and my body still has not.”

The fast on the wrong day. The reflex to bench when a holiday comes around. The way Shabbat sounds when you are not keeping it. The body keeps the calendar even when the mind has moved on.

“I am closer to my family than I admit and further than they know.”

You are still in the group chat. You still go to the wedding. You still cannot say what you actually think. The distance is real and the connection is real and they are both true at once.

Three composites of therapy over time.

Composite stories. Details changed to protect privacy.

Sarah, late 20s, former ultra-Orthodox.

Sarah came in eight months after leaving. The leaving had been planned for two years. The being-out had not. The first six sessions she described as “everything I expected and somehow worse.” We worked the original voice: not the doctrine itself but the part of her that had carried it since she was four. Around session twelve she said the voice was still there but it had gotten quieter. Around session twenty she said she had stopped checking for it.

David, 34, modern Orthodox, quietly dual-life.

David kept the externals: Shabbat with the family, the kippah at work. The questions had been there since his Stern years. The dual life had become the bigger problem than the questions. We did not push the leaving. We worked what the dual life was costing him. Over a year he made several smaller integrations and one large one. He did not become out. He became more himself inside the keeping.

Amanda, 31, ex-evangelical, post-deconstruction.

Amanda had done the work intellectually. She had read the books, listened to the podcasts, left the church. What she had not done was let her body know. Purity culture had wired her in ways the deconstruction had not touched. We worked the body and the shame in parallel. By the end of year one she said sex was different. By the end of year two she said her relationship to her own body was different.

Why people hesitate to start.

“My family will know.”

They will not. Therapy here is confidential to you. We do not contact family without your written authorization. You decide what to say and when.

“I have tried therapy and the therapist did not get it.”

The match matters. A non-religious therapist can miss the shape of what you are describing. We match you with someone on our team who has worked with people leaving high-demand worlds. You do not have to teach the basics of the world you came from.

“I am not sure I want to talk about religion every week.”

You will not. The religious framework is the soil. The plant is the rest of your life: relationships, work, identity, the body. We work the plant. The soil comes up as needed.

“I am too far in. Or too far out.”

The work meets you where you are. Sarah, David, and Amanda above were at different distances when they started. The distance is information, not a disqualifier.

“I came in to talk about leaving and the first six months we mostly talked about my mother. I did not understand at the time. I understand now.”: Anonymized composite. Shared with permission and lightly edited for privacy.

What people ask on the first call.

Is OTD therapy NYC actually different from regular therapy?

Yes, when the therapist gets the world you came from. The shape of the leaving, the body memory, and the family math are specific. Our team includes clinicians who have worked with adults leaving Orthodoxy, evangelical Christianity, Mormonism, and other high-demand groups. You will not have to teach the basics.

Do I have to be fully out to start?

No. About half of the OTD and post-religious adults we see are still in some way. The work meets you where you are. If you are PIMO (physically in, mentally out), dual-life modern Orthodox, or still attending church for family reasons, you belong here.

Will you push me to leave or push me to stay?

Neither. Therapy is yours. Our job is to help you hear yourself clearly. Some clients become more out over time. Some become more integrated inside the keeping. Either is a real outcome.

How much does OTD therapy in NYC cost?

Cost depends on your individual insurance plan. We are in-network with Aetna and Cigna commercial plans. For most other plans we provide a receipt-style superbill upon request for out-of-network reimbursement. We share the exact questions to ask your insurance on the matching call.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. The practice does not prescribe. If medication is appropriate we coordinate with your primary care doctor or refer you to a psychiatrist.

Can I bring up religion only when it comes up, not every session?

Yes. Most sessions are not about religion directly. They are about relationships, work, identity, and the body. Religion comes up when it is what is producing the surface issue.

How long does the work take?

It varies. Some clients work weekly for six months and find that enough for the question they came in with. Others stay longer because the question keeps changing. We do not promise an end date because the question is not the same in month three as in month twelve.

Do I have to leave my family or community to do this work?

No. Post-religious therapy is not about deciding to leave. Many clients stay observant, stay connected to family, or land somewhere in between. The work is examining what you actually believe versus what you were taught to believe, at whatever pace and toward whatever outcome is yours.

Where are you located?

In office in Midtown Manhattan at 141 East 35th Street. Online sessions are available statewide across New York State.
