What does therapy in NYC, with a focus on NYU students and graduate trainees look like at Therapy24x7?

Therapy24x7 sees adults in NYC, with a focus on NYU students and graduate trainees and across all of New York State via secure online video, weekly, with the same clinician each week. Sessions take place at the practice’s Midtown Manhattan office (141 East 35th Street) or online statewide, no rotating therapists and no session quotas. The primary orientation is psychodynamic and relational, with evidence-based methods woven in when useful. The practice is in-network with Cigna and Aetna; for other carriers, we provide out-of-network superbills for possible reimbursement.

For NYU graduate & professional students

Your NYU plan can cover weekly therapy. The waitlist doesn’t have to.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy for NYU graduate students and young professionals in New York. NYU is changing SHIP carriers for 2026-27, with new waivers running through Aetna Student Health, and last year’s Wellfleet plan ran on the Cigna network. We are in-network with both Cigna and Aetna, so coverage here continues through the change. First session usually within five to seven days of the matching call. Weekly, long-term work rather than short-term skills modules.

NYU student therapy, the version that actually starts.

NYU’s Counseling and Wellness Services cap sessions and run a waitlist. We don’t. We are a private psychotherapy practice in NYC, in-network with your NYU SHIP plan in both its recent Wellfleet form (Cigna network) and the 2026-27 Aetna Student Health transition. Adults only. Weekly. In person at our NYC offices, or by secure online session anywhere in New York State.

Is this you?

The high-functioning version, quietly running on fumes.

Six things we hear from NYU students in the first session. If two or more sound familiar, this is the right page. Many students arrive after the slide we describe in when college loneliness starts changing everyday habits: sleep drifting, meals skipped, messages left unanswered.

You’re three weeks behind on a deadline and you’ve stopped opening the email about it.
Sunday night chest tightness now starts Saturday afternoon and you’ve stopped fighting it.
Your cohort thinks you have it figured out. You’re the only one who knows you don’t.
You moved here for the program and you haven’t made a friend you’d call at 2am.
You score well, present well, defend well. None of it feels like it counts.
The thought of one more “wellness module” makes you want to throw your laptop.
First-gen, international, queer, BIPOC, disabled, neurodivergent: the practice has clinicians who know these specific experiences, and we will say so on the matching call.
Insurance

Two carriers, four ways to be covered.

If you’re on the NYU Student Health Insurance Plan, the carrier depends on your plan year: through summer 2026, NYU SHIP ran on Wellfleet, which uses the Cigna network, and NYU is transitioning to Aetna Student Health for 2026-27. We are in-network with Cigna and Aetna, so both plan years process in-network here. Aetna direct (including Aetna Student) is also in-network. We share what to ask your insurance about your benefits on our end. We also recommend you call the member services number on the back of your card to confirm your mental health copay and whether your deductible has been met.

Our approach

Weekly psychodynamic psychotherapy, not skills modules.

Four things that make this different from short-term campus counseling.

01

Weekly, same time

A full hour, every week, with the same clinician. Same day, same time. You don’t burn the first ten minutes of every session re-orienting: the work picks up where it left off.

02

Psychodynamic depth

We slow down and look at where the pattern came from, not just how to manage it this week.

03

Adults only

Graduate students, professional students, post-bacs, young professionals. First-gen, international, queer, BIPOC, disabled, and neurodivergent welcome. We don’t do couples, family, or child therapy.

04

In person or online

In office in Midtown Manhattan, or secure online sessions anywhere in New York State.

What students ask before they book

The four hesitations. Answered straight.

“Won’t this end up on my student record?”

No. We’re a private outpatient practice. We don’t communicate with NYU about your care unless you ask us to (for example, a Moses Center accommodation letter: the Moses Center is NYU’s disability and accessibility office). Your sessions, notes, and diagnoses stay between you and your clinician.

“Whoever’s on the plan, will they see what I’m in therapy for?”

If you’re on NYU SHIP directly (which most international and independent students are), you control the EOBs (the Explanation of Benefits the insurer mails about each claim). If you’re on a parent’s Cigna plan, the EOB shows “behavioral health office visit” and a billing code (CPT code 90834 or 90837), not a diagnosis or anything that was discussed. We can also talk through additional privacy options on the matching call.

“I tried the Wellness Exchange. It did not stick.”

Most students who reach us have. Campus counseling is built for crisis triage and short-term work, capped at a small number of sessions. Weekly psychodynamic therapy is a different kind of work. We see the pattern campus counseling did not have time to reach.

“I don’t have time. I’m in a PhD program.”

One hour a week. By secure online session from your apartment, or in person at one of our NYC offices. Many students book the slot right before or after a class so it folds into the day. Most PhD and JD patients tell us the weekly hour is the one thing on the calendar that actually gives time back.

“I came in because I couldn’t finish my dissertation chapter. I left understanding why I couldn’t finish anything I cared about. The chapter got done in month seven, almost as a side effect.”

What we see, week to week.

Most NYU students reach out in November, March, or July. November is post-midterms. March is dissertation and thesis season. July is when the program quiets down and whatever they have been pushing down has room to surface.

Around the third or fourth session, almost everyone says some version of “I thought this was just what grad school is supposed to feel like.” Sometimes it is. More often, the program is pressing on something that was already there (anxiety, perfectionism, a hard time with feedback or criticism), and grad school is making it harder to manage.

Campus counseling is a good fit for short-term help. Eight sessions, crisis support, skills coaching. That is what it is built for. If the same pattern keeps coming back across semesters, you are looking at something that needs longer-form therapy, not more triage.

FAQ

Six questions, NYU-specific.

Is the NYU Student Health Insurance Plan really covered?

Yes. Through the 2025-26 plan year, NYU SHIP was administered by Wellfleet, which uses the Cigna PPO network, and NYU announced a carrier change for 2026-27 with new waivers running through Aetna Student Health. We are in-network with Cigna and Aetna, so either card processes at the in-network rate. We share the exact questions to ask your plan about copay before the first session.

What will my copay be?

Your exact copay depends on your plan. We share what to ask your plan about benefits before you start, and we always recommend you also call member services on the back of your card to confirm your exact mental health copay and whether your deductible has been met.

How fast can I get a first session?

Free matching call within two business days of booking. First clinical session typically within five to seven days of that call. Faster if you have flexibility on day and time.

Do I pick my therapist or do you?

We do. The free 15-minute call is with our care team, not a clinician. We listen to what’s going on, what you’ve tried, and what you want from the work. Then we pair you with the right person on the team. If the fit isn’t right after six sessions, we rematch at no charge.

Can I do sessions from my apartment, or only at the office?

Either. We see patients in person at our NYC offices (Midtown / Murray Hill, Chelsea, Upper West Side, Brooklyn Heights) and by HIPAA-secure online session anywhere in New York State. Many students alternate.

Do you prescribe medication or do ADHD testing?

No. We are a psychotherapy-only practice. If medication or formal testing is the right call, we refer you to a psychiatrist or psychologist we know and refer to and coordinate with them on your care.

Do you see college students who aren’t at NYU?

Yes. The focus on NYU reflects how often NYU SHIP questions come up, not a limit on who we see. Adult students from any NYC campus can start the same way: one matching call, then weekly sessions in Midtown or online anywhere in New York State. If your student plan routes through Cigna or Aetna, in-network coverage may apply; your member portal can confirm.

Beyond NYU

Therapy for college students in NYC, beyond NYU.

The pressures are not NYU-specific. Whichever campus you are on, the pattern looks similar: a schedule that reads as manageable on paper, grades that stay intact, and a private sense of running on less and less. Campus counseling is built for short-term support. When a semester needs more than that, weekly therapy off campus is the usual next step.

Therapy24x7 works with adult students from any NYC campus, not only NYU. The structure is the same one described on this page: weekly psychodynamic psychotherapy, the same clinician each week, in person at the Midtown Manhattan office or online across New York State.

Insurance works campus by campus. NYU SHIP routes behavioral health through the Cigna network, which is why coverage is simple here. Other university student plans use different networks. If yours runs through Cigna or Aetna, sessions may be covered in-network the same way. The member portal or the number on your insurance card can confirm which network handles behavioral health for your plan.
